Bike Library & Workshop

The Bike Library & Workshop is a community bike shop on campus operated by Sustain SU. We are fully equipped with the tools and space necessary to repair and maintain bicycles. Bike repairs are DIY, however, our volunteers & Bike Library Mechanic can provide guidance and offer some help. Tool and stands are entirely FREE for the campus community to use.

The Bike Library & Workshop also sells used and new components and parts such as tubes, tires, and other accessories.

The Bike Library was founded in 2005 in the basement of the Students’ Union Building. It originally operated as a place to loan bikes to students and staff (hence the name). In 2013, the Bike Library moved to SAB 1-13, and its name was changed to the Bike Library & Workshop (BLW).

The inside of the bike library with many bikes hung in a row.

BLW Services

Bike Rentals

All bike rentals require a deposit of $160 which will be refunded when the bike is returned, in good condition, to the BLW.

Renters will be provided with a U-Lock and key, and a pair of lights if needed. Please indicate whether you plan to ride before sunrise or after dusk during your rental period. All BLW bikes are equipped with a bell, as required by law.

  • $5.00 + GST one-day rental
  • $15.00 + GST per week rental

For sanitary and safety reasons, we cannot provide renters with a helmet. While cyclists over the age of 18 are not required to wear a helmet while riding, we highly recommend doing so!

Bike Service Appointments

Due to space limitations, please book an appointment to come in and work on your bike in the workshop when possible. We have two types of appointments:

  • DIY Appointment: Book this service to let us know that you require little/no guidance with servicing your bike. This reserves a bike stand for you to more easily access your mount while you work on it.
  • DIY+ Appointment: Book this service if you require help with servicing your bike. Volunteers will do their best to help you out!

Appointments will take priority at any given time, but if you need something small and feel confident with DIY, drop-in during our regular hours!

Note: We do not bleed hydraulic brakes or repair suspension. Please visit your local bike shop for these specialized services.

Support the Bike Library & Workshop

If you would like to support this initiative and community space, we accept monetary and in-kind donations. Visit the Workshop during our regular hours and speak to staff or volunteers on shift to make your donation.

We can accept cash, credit, and debit donations.

We also accept donations of bike parts and components (new and used). We cannot currently accept whole-bike donations due to space constraints.
