Tips for Successful Tabling
Students feel at home in the Students’ Union Building. One of the reasons the building is so successful (and busy) is that students can relax and enjoy the building as their “living room”.
For precisely this reason, we don’t allow unwanted solicitation of students in the building – students are more willing to visit and engage in the building when they’re comfortable.
Here are some suggested strategies that we’d recommend you can use to get the attention of the thousands of students that pass by your table in a given day.
- Have your team look welcoming and approachable
- We regularly see tablers scrolling on their phone or typing away on a laptop. This does not feel inviting to students. Encourage/require your team members at the table to put away their phone and laptop.
- Giveaways, giveaways, giveaways!
- Students love free stuff! Whether it’s a branded pen or phone stand, or an entry into a larger prize, this is one of the most effective ways to get students’ attention.
- Remember that the UASU sets limitations on food and drink giveaways, which must be requested and approved in advance..
- A fun call-to-action at the table can be even more enticing for students. Something like a “spin-to-win” wheel is a great option!

- Clear & effective signage
- Consider large, clear signage that communicates your value proposition to students.
- It’s great to display your logo/brand so they know who you are, but that doesn’t necessarily give them a reason to stop by your table.
- Use signage that clearly communicates your call-to-action or value proposition to students. For example, place a sign on your table that says “SPIN TO WIN FREE PRIZES”, etc.
- A tablecloth might seem like a small thing, but it will help separate your table from those on either side, is a great place to show your logo, and adds to the professional and cohesive look and feel of your table.
- Remember that any signage must remain within your allotted table space (a standard table space is 10’ wide and cannot encroach more than 6’ from the wall) and that backdrops or other large banners or furniture must be approved in advance by the UASU.
