Week of Welcome (WOW)

Week of Welcome (WOW) is the signature annual student event at the University of Alberta, welcoming thousands of new and returning students back to campus with an exciting array of daytime and evening events. Through WOW, the UASU helps establish the vibrant university lifestyle for students, providing a crucial platform for building and strengthening friendships.

WOW sponsors can similarly establish an important presence within students’ lives. The week consistently proves to be a prime environment for sponsors to connect with the 18-24 year old demographic at a pivotal time when they are making long-term decisions about brand loyalty.

Featured activities during WOW include an extremely popular multi-day licensed Mainstage concert area, featuring popular national and local bands and artists (approximately 3000 attendees per day); a Clubs Fair involving 300+ student groups; Movie Night; Comedy Night; a Hypnotist Show; a Headphone Disco; and free pancake breakfasts. All in all, as many as 80% of students at the U of A attend some part of WOW.

  • WOW Village: connect with students at the crossroads of campus, with a 10’ x 10’ tent along a main pathway in the campus quad. Electrical power is available.
  • WOW Mainstage: a similar opportunity as WOW Village to connect with students from a 10’ x 10’ tent. With WOW Mainstage being an 18+ event, tents in this area are intended for 18+ vendors such as licensed venues.
  • Students’ Union Building (SUB): With tens of thousands of students passing through the building, tabling along the main corridor in SUB affords you an indoor alternative to the activities in the campus quad.
  • Pancake Breakfast: Nothing attracts students like a free breakfast! Join us as a daily sponsor for this event and receive exclusive tabling along the breakfast line-up.
  • Evening Event Sponsorship: Receive unique and memorable brand recognition as a Presenting Sponsor of one of the evening events such as movie night, comedy night or our hypnotist show.

Campus Cup

Campus Cup is the annual, campus-wide dodgeball tournament that takes place every November. It involves over 100 co-ed teams competing against each other to win the elusive Campus Cup in one of our three conferences (recreational, experienced, and competitive). With approximately 1800 students participating over two days, Campus Cup is a fantastic way for students to engage in spirited competition and build camaraderie.

Sponsoring Campus Cup offers a unique opportunity to connect with an active and engaged segment of the student population. Your brand can be associated with teamwork, healthy competition, and student well-being, reaching participants directly within a dynamic and high-energy environment. Sponsorship includes opportunities for brand visibility at the tournament grounds and within the Players Lounge, allowing for direct engagement with a large and enthusiastic audience.

  • Players Lounge: Receive unique and memorable brand recognition as the Presenting Sponsor of our popular Players Lounge (age 18+).
  • Player Welcome Bags: Provide relevant promotional/sample products or services for inclusion in the welcome bags distributed to all 1800+ players.
  • Brand Recognition: Logo placement and brand recognition is available throughout the event.

AntiFreeze

After the winter break, the Students’ Union hosts AntiFreeze, a cross-campus student competition. This week challenges 40 teams as they vie for winter glory (and an all-expenses-paid ski trip weekend) in 11 separate competitions across campus. With half of the challenges completed in the Students’ Union Building and the other half featured outdoors in the campus quad, individual AntiFreeze components require 2.5+ hours to complete, are highly visible, and are entertaining for participants and spectators alike.

AntiFreeze offers sponsors the opportunity to pursue an intensive promotional strategy that reinforces primary messages throughout an entire week with campus signage, promotional items, and competition-based opportunities. Through this unparalleled event, sponsors will be reinforced as supporters of the social components of student life.

  • Individual Event Sponsorship: Many of the AntiFreeze events throughout the week have opportunities for Presenting Sponsors. In some cases sponsors
  • Tabling in the Students’ Union Building: Between the start-of-term Bookstore rush, new students joining campus for the winter term, and the flurry of ongoing AntiFreeze events, SUB is a buzz of activity during this week. Set up a table during this premium opportunity for maximum exposure during the Winter academic term.

Last Class Bash

To celebrate the completion of the academic year, the UASU hosts a suite of events on the Last Day of Classes. Alongside other activities, the UASU hosts live music entertainment throughout the day. In the evening, a ticketed show provides a last hurrah before students head into finals.

The Last Class Bash acts as the final significant UASU event before students begin their summer. Sponsors can use this opportunity to trial new launches or simply remind students of their products before they end their academic terms.

Tabling in the Students’ Union Building

Table space in the Students’ Union Building (SUB) is available for booking year-round on a daily or weekly basis. Whether you're looking to raise awareness, recruit members, or sell merchandise, SUB offers a high-traffic location of 10,000+ daily users to reach a large and diverse student audience.

In addition to our major highlighted events, the UASU hosts a variety of other popular annual events throughout the year that offer excellent sponsorship opportunities to connect with the student body:

  • Holiday Event TBD (200 people)
  • January Concert (300 people)
  • Horowitz Student Event (700 people)
  • Year-End Horowitz Event (700 people)
  • Horowitz Movie Nights (500 people, 7 nights)
  • SUBstage Sessions (100 people, 7 total)
  • Week-long Event in March (100 people)

Weekly events Trivia Tuesday, Karaoke Wednesday, Music Bingo Thursday (~50 people on each day, people every week of the school year)

In-Kind Sponsorship

In some circumstances we may be able to accept high-value items of tangible value to students as in-kind sponsorship, in lieu of cash sponsorship. Acceptable items may include event/activity tickets, clothing (especially branded or limited-edition clothing), electronics, gift cards, etc.
