Social Media Comment Policy & Community Guidelines
Your UASU values open dialogue, academic freedom, and diverse perspectives, and we encourage robust debate and community engagement on our social media platforms. However, to ensure our digital spaces remain constructive, safe, and accessible for everyone, all comments and interactions are subject to the following community guidelines.
What Is Welcome
We encourage comments that:
- Express personal viewpoints, agreement, or disagreement with event topics, speakers, or institutional decisions.
- Engage in respectful discussion with other community members.
- Ask questions regarding event details, campus safety, or organizational policies.
What Is Restricted
Comments containing any of the following will be hidden or removed, and the posting user may be blocked:
- Direct Threats & Incitement: Any content that threatens, encourages, or incites physical violence, illegal acts, or property damage against speakers, attendees, students, staff, or the public.
- Hate Speech & Discrimination: Dehumanizing language, slurs, or targeting individuals or groups based on race, ethnicity, religion, disability, age, nationality, veteran status, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
- Harassment & Targeted Abuse: Personal attacks, persistent bullying, or aggressive, abusive behaviour directed at specific individuals.
- Doxxing & Private Information: Sharing private personal details (e.g., home addresses, personal phone numbers, non-public email addresses, or schedules) of speakers, students, or staff.
- Spam, Commercial & Off-Topic Flood: Automated spam, promotional links, commercial solicitation, or repetitive, identical text intended to flood or disrupt the comment section.
- Explicit Content: Unsolicited graphic violence, sexually explicit imagery, or illegal material.
How We Moderate
Your UASU will never hide or delete comments simply because they express critical, controversial, or unpopular opinions regarding our organization, an event we run, or a speaker we invite. We will only take the following actions for comments or users that breach the community guidelines:
- Hiding vs. Deleting: Where platforms allow (such as Facebook or Instagram), violating comments will be hidden rather than deleted to preserve record-keeping while keeping public feeds safe. Please note that some platforms will automatically hide comments that breach their own community guidelines.
- User Bans: Account blocking is reserved for repeat policy violations, severe threats, or automated spam networks.
- Log of Moderation Actions: During high-visibility events, internal moderation teams will maintain a record of all hidden/deleted posts. Screenshots of any safety-related threats will be forwarded to our campus safety and legal teams.
