Nitohtamowin brings leadership processes in alignment with Indigenous world views.

The Nitohtamowin Program

Nitohtamowin (formerly the Indigenous Leadership Program) is a personal development program for FNMI students at the UofA who are interested in developing their leadership skills. The program aims to create a safe space for Indigenous students to empower each other with distinct processes of Indigenous leadership, build community and personal confidence, and inspire participation in leadership roles.

Nitohtamowin ᓂᑐᐦᑕᒧᐃᐧᐣ translates to the act of listening in the Plains Cree Language. Indigenous undergraduate students at the University of Alberta are encouraged to attend presentations by Indigenous community leaders, knowledge keepers and students. To further their understanding on the meaning of Leadership in Indigenous communities.

Through workshops, speaker events, exercises and panels the program is approached through an ethic of kinship to discuss topics of leadership.

All sessions except March 15 will be hybrid gatherings, meaning that participants are welcome to attend in person, or virtually. Details will be shared with admitted applicants.

Certificates will be provided upon completion.
