Green for Good Market

Green for Good Market

Get ready for the Green for Good Market!!

This year, Sustain SU has combined what was previously our University of Alberta Farmers Market and our Green Market clothing swap into the Green for Good Market (GFGM). The GFGM is a public market and clothing swap taking place 7 days throughout the academic year in the Student’s Union Building (SUB) on North Campus. Our market dates are as follows:

  • September 15th, 2023
  • November10th, 2023
  • December 7th, 2023 (clothing swap offered!)
  • December 8th, 2023
  • February 1st, 2024 (clothing swap offered!)
  • February 2nd, 2024
  • March 15th, 2024

Although many things at our market will be changing this year, our mission to provide the campus community with local, sustainable and ethical goods and services will remain the same! We will continue to host a variety of local sustainable businesses, makers and artisans and serve as a gathering place where the campus community can engage with vendors, sustainability focused student groups and community partners. We will be focusing more closely on raising awareness and increasing involvement in sharing, thrifting, and community. Details about clothing swap donations can be found below.

We will also continue to provide students with enriching volunteer experiences, during which they are able to participate in all aspects of the market’s operations and contribute to making decisions about its overall direction. If this sounds up your alley, you can find updates regarding our open volunteer positions here!

To stay up to date on our amazing market and other Sustain SU initiatives, give us a follow on Instagram @uasusustain or sign up for our newsletter here ! New vendors will be profiled and other market related information will be posted regularly.

The Clothing & Item Swap

Clothing Drive Logistics

Starting Wednesday January 10th and through Wednesday, January 24th individuals can drop off clothing and other items at SU InfoLink locations. Clothing must be cleaned and in a sealed bag. InfoLink locations accepting donations include Central Academic Building (CAB), Student Life Central (SUB), and University of Alberta International (UAI). All donations collected during this period will be available for swap on February 1st, 2024!

At InfoLink, you will be asked to scan a QR code to fill in information regarding your contribution to the swap. Questions include how many articles are in the bag (best estimate), your contact information and your acknowledgement of where the items will be used/donated. You will also be asked to fill out your contact information on a Green Market Voucher provided by InfoLink. You must hold on to the Market Voucher in order to “purchase” your free items on the day of the market. You will be informed of how many free items you may “purchase” when you attend the market, as items will be sorted and accepted leading up to the market.

Clothing Swap Logistics

The clothing swap will offer free clothes to individuals who bring in clothes. The number of items accepted to the swap will be examined and processed. Acceptable items will be sorted and individuals will receive a credit to purchase a “new” piece of clothing for each acceptable garment. Items unfit will either be donated to an organization in need, or if in poor quality, offered to Blenderz Garment Recyclers.

We offer financial transactions for those who might want to make purchases. Clothing will be sorted and stored on racks, tables and in bins. A sign will inform shoppers the cost of items, typically between $2 and $5. A special rack will be established for more lucrative items - these items may be priced individually. We will accept cash, credit and debit! Revenues will be donated to Indigenous Climate Action.

We will also be running a Food Drive with the Campus Food Bank. We will accept non-perishable food items in exchange for clothes and items. Most often this will be a one-for-one swap, however, more than one non-perishable item may be required for more lucrative items.

Acceptable Items

  1. Clothing: all clothing items must be in good condition and must be void of any holes, rips, tears, stains, or other colour disfigurations. We will not accept donations of socks or undergarments.
  2. Household Goods: household goods can include kitchen appliances, decor, books, and more. Please ensure that all items donated are in working condition with no dents, chips, or scratches and are properly cleaned before being donated.
