The project collaborates with three orphanages in Semarang City, Central Java, two of which are female orphanages supported by the church community. The orphanages host children from different backgrounds and areas of Indonesia. Normally they are brought to the orphanage by the community or their own parents. Living harmony inside and outside of the orphanage is what the orphanages emphasize. The children are given responsibility into daily tasks from morning until evening, no matter the ages. At the moment, they are hosting children from 1 year old until 18 years old. After finishing high school, they are given the option for working or going to university. Normally the orphans will be no longer staying in the orphanage. Nevertheless, they still get basic life support from the orphanage until they can be independent financially. In working with the children, the caretakers teach them to take care of their fellow friends. So the kids would often help each other in doing their tasks. The orphanage also educates them to be independent through giving them entrepreneur skills and an opportunity to practice their skills. Nevertheless, formal education is the most important for all of them. They pray, play, learn, laugh, and support each other.

The volunteer will be assisting the caretakers in supervising the children. The volunteer will take part in their daily activities such as waking up the children, helping them in school preparation, creating activities in the free time, and learning school lessons. Moreover, the presence of volunteers could give them motivation for practicing their foreign language knowledge. Intercultural learning in the form of dialogue, music and games could give the students a better understanding of other countries and cultures.

A volunteer experience may give you ideas or a push in deciding your professional aspirations - one of the most important and difficult decisions one should make in life. It can make stronger your motivation or give you additional inspiration in what you are studying or working. And most important, by being a volunteer you gain the hands-on experience you will hardly get at lectures or at the office desk. In a workcamp you can have such an involving and inspiring time!
After successful participation CADIP issues a certificate for the completed volunteer hours.
