Nathan Sunday

Hello! My name is Nathan Sunday and I am in my second year of a Bachelor of Arts in Native Studies combined with the Certificate of Aboriginal Governance and Partnership. I am seeking to represent this great faculty as a Students’ Union councillor. In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada released a list of 94 ‘calls to action’ that are needed to be addresses in order to further Canadian reconciliation. Among these advocate for a greater emphasis on Indigenous knowledge and histories within the Education system. As part of this, two Canadian universities—the University of Winnipeg and Lakehead University—have made indigenous studies a prerequisite for all undergraduate degrees. I believe it is important for all Canadians to know both Indigenous culture and knowledge pre-colonialism, and the contemporary effects Aboriginals face as a result of colonialism. So, as students’ union councillor I will lobby for the restructuring of undergraduate prerequisites to include native studies as a mandatory requirement. Other things I wish to campaign for are: (1) increased recognition of the Faculty of Native Studies, both within and apart from Arts, (2) the stabilization of student fees—including textbook—and tuition, and (3) lobby for increased bursaries and awards for both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students. Even if you don’t want to vote for me, please vote in this year’s By-Election. Thanks!
