Week of Welcome General Volunteer Opportunities

Week of Welcome is the biggest volunteer group on campus, and has positions for people with all kinds of strengths and interests. We are currently hiring for our three General Volunteer positions:

  • Faculty Leaders
  • Orientation Presentation Facilitators
  • Program Support Crew

PLEASE NOTE: The current plan for WOW 2021 is a hybrid model with a mix of online and in-person experiences but there are no exact schedules at this time. Week of Welcome staff are monitoring the current environment and will look to the Alberta government and University of Alberta for more guidance as September approaches. Although September remains uncertain, the need for dedicated and passionate volunteers remains the same!

Position Descriptions

Faculty Leaders

Approximate time commitment = 60 hours (April - September)

Faculty Leaders serve as the first point of contact for new students on campus! Faculty Leaders ensure both new and returning students transition smoothly into university life. Responsibilities of Faculty Leaders include:

  • New Student Orientation: welcome new students to the university by facilitating campus tours, acting as support for various presentations, participating in online panels, and answering questions, both University-wide and Faculty specific, through a variety of means.
  • Welcome Events: Faculty Leaders will typically be assigned a minimum of 3 Week of Welcome shifts such as - Online Meet & Greets, webinar moderation, WOW Village, Pancake Breakfast, Quad Activities, Ticket Sales, Main Stage, and Evening Events.

Orientation Presentation Facilitator

Approximate time commitment = 75 hours (April - September)

As an Orientation Presentation Facilitator, you will sharpen your public speaking, presentation and facilitation skills by developing online content and hosting informative, engaging, and exciting sessions about student life. This year, information sessions are expected to be both online and in-person.

Topics include:

  • Involvement
  • Health and Wellness
  • Transitioning to University

If you excel at speaking in front of large crowds, or are looking to develop these skills, and are passionate about helping students achieve success in their personal and academic lives, this position offers an excellent opportunity for personal and professional growth and development.

Program Support Crew

Approximate time commitment = 60 hours (April - September)

Program Support members provide logistical support throughout the Week of Welcome program. Back-end logistics and implementation are the focus for this group and typical involvement can include:

  • New Student Orientation: registration processes and help desk
  • Technical support for online presentations and interaction processes (ie. Q&A panel)
  • Site specific tasks: efficiently carrying out the setup, maintenance, and takedown of WOW Village, MainStage, and Evening Events.
