Digital Signage (SUTV)
In the fall of 2010, the U of A Students’ Union installed ten digital screens in the Students’ Union Building, placed to catch the eyes of the close to 25,000 people who pass through the building each day. Known as SUTV, the network was designed to provide up-to-the-minute information to students, with relevant feeds, including news and weather, throughout the day.
It is also designed as an advertising medium: air time on SUTV is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Advertisers can chose to advertise across the whole network, or select specific locations that best suit their needs or their budget.
Rates are extremely cost-effective for our University clients, and feedback from our commercial clients tells us that our external rates are very competitive. SUTV is an excellent and timely way to inform students about upcoming on-campus events, or to promote a business, service or product.

Since its launch, the network has grown exponentially. At the start of the 2017/18 school year, we had nearly 120 screens, making SUTV the effective standard for digital signage on campus.
SUTV advertisement requirements (information for designers)
- Your advertisement must be 1150×865 pixels in size and in landscape format (not portrait); we cannot adjust your file if it is the wrong size or format
- Your file must be a JPEG/JPG (72 ppi, RGB colour space); we cannot accept any other file formats
- Your file must be less than 5 MB in size

Our Media Kit has other recommendations with regard to design, word count and so on. But if your advert does not meet the above specifications, we will not be able to run it, and your campaign may be delayed.
Partnering with SUTV
There are many commercial solutions available for digital signage, but they typically require a long-term financial commitment, and are often a "one size fits all" solution.
With SUTV, the Students’ Union has created a “made-on-campus” digital signage solution that is specifically designed to meet the needs of the campus community. Our Partners get to design the screen layout they want, and have control over the majority of the screen content. And we provide the technology at no charge.
We have partnerships with many university "organizations" including Residences Services, Medicine, Students Services, Rehab Medicine, the University Bookstore, Physical Education & Recreation, the Libraries... the list grows almost every month: we recently added three screens in Education.
If you are considering digital signage for the first time, or have underused capacity on existing screens, we should get together. We have considerable technical expertise in deploying and managing digital signage, our solution is entirely web-based, and there are no commercial software or other fees.

Transit and Information Screens
The SU operates a number of Transit Screens on campus, which display bus departure times for different locations. The response to the first Transit Screen in SUB was very positive: a second was installed in Lister Centre, and we have had requests for screens in other locations as well.
