Marina Banister
Marina Banister VP Academic

Advocating for the academic interests on behalf of 30,000 undergraduate students, Marina Banister is the Vice-President Academic of the Students Union. Marina is a born and raised Edmontonian, and recently finished her fourth year of Political Science in the Faculty of Arts. When she is not working, she enjoys riding her bike year round, listening to talk radio, and staying up to date on municipal politics. Marina ran for Vice-President Academic because she believes in the importance of student governance and the commitment to a broad education with learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. Marina has sat on every level of student governance at the UofA including her Department Association, Faculty Association, Student Council, GFC, Senate, and many affiliated committees. She also dedicates her time to the community, including serving as 2015 - 2016 Chair of the City of Edmonton Youth Council.

Marina’s top priorities as VP Academic are ensuring programs offer the flexibility students need to succeed in their degree; increasing the variety of interdisciplinary minors available to students; and working to strengthen department associations so students have representation at all levels of the University. She is also passionate about making governance accessible and transparent which means informing and including students in important decisions. Marina cares about strengthening every student's' University experience and invites all students to reach out online or drop into her office in SUB 2-900 if they would like to chat about anything related to governance or academics at the University of Alberta.

Duties of the VP Academic

The Vice-President Academic is responsible for all advocacy related to academic issues at the University of Alberta. This position sits on many board and committees, including the Students' Union Policy Committee, the General Faculties Council, multiple GFC standing committees and subcommittees, the Council of Faculty Associations and its working groups and more. It works closely with all of the student faculty and department associations to ensure that students receive the best possible education at the University of Alberta.
